Roe Deer Stag (Capreolus capreolus)

Roe deer stag capreolus capreolus portrait

This image is only a slight crop. It was taken at 400mm on my 70d and the deer was only 5 metres away at the most. It was actually one of those magical experiences when you get to spend a small amount of time with a wild animal that is totally comfortable with your presence. I had seen this young male coming out of the oil seed rape onto the path as I came round a corner and as always I stuck my head round first to see if there was anything on the path. Because I saw him first I was able to crawl gradually towards him as he gradually made his way towards me. He was obviously curious and zig-zagged towards me over a period of thirty minutes constantly alternating between eating, scent marking and fighting with various bits of grass and undergrowth. A truely magical experience that doesn't happen very often, sure I was late home but when these encounters happen you should grab them with both hands! Here's to the next time we meet young man!
